Collection Description

Historical Note

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) is a college within the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Originally known as the state agricultural college, it was founded in 1859 by the University Board of Trustees as part of a complete reorganization of the University. Beginning in 1918, it was the first college at the University to accept women. The three main campuses are located in Athens, Tifton and Griffin. There also are numerous off-campus and research centers with Georgia's Agricultural Extension programs located in 157 of 159 counties.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of photographs from the University of Georgia's College of Agriculture and its extension programs. They date from the early 1900s through the late 1940s. Among the photographs are pictures of people canning, farming and with their livestock. In addition, there are photographs of students playing football at the University. Although most of the photographs are in black and white, of special interest are the ones in the collection that are hand-tinted.

Also included are photographs from the 1970's that feature College of Agriculture award ceremonies and meetings.
