Historical Note

The Chemistry Department at the University of Georgia dates back to 1823 when James Jackson was appointed as the chair of Chemistry and Geology. In 1903, the Chemistry building and its contents were totally destroyed by fire and rebuilt on the same site in 1904. A twelve million dollar Science Center, which includes the Chemistry Building, was constructed on South Campus in 1960 and a Chemistry annex was added in 1997. Today the Department offers B.S., M.S and Ph.D. degrees.

Scope and Content

The materials in this collection date from 1904 to 1942. Some items of interest are correspondence from World War I, departmental inventories and the recounting of two laboratory explosions in 1934.
