This series includes Carolyn Mattingly's journals and daily calendars, letters, notes, book drafts and other writings, as well as files related to her work as president of the organization, Congressional Families for Drug-free Youth. The bulk of the material consists of journals kept sporadically by Carolyn Mattingly from her senior year at Indiana University until her death in 1997 and documents, to varying degrees, her personal interests, travels, and daily life in St. Simons Island, Georgia, as well as in Washington, D.C., Belgium, and Seychelles.

Biographical / historical:

Carolyn Mattingly (née Longcamp) was born June 10, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from high school in Aurora, Indiana. In 1956, she received a B.A. in French and English, with honors, from Indiana University. From 1956 to 1958, she taught high school French and English in Columbus, Indiana. On June 16, 1957, she married Mack Mattingly. Together, they had two daughters, Anne and Jane.

In 1960, she moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where she was involved in many community and civic activities. An accomplished pianist, she also taught French, English, and various music courses and was a frequent speaker on drug abuse prevention. Mrs. Mattingly was a poet, a member of the Georgia Poetry Society and, in 1995, had a poem accepted by The National Library of Poetry. She also authored a portion of "A Christmas Housewarming," which benefited Habitat for Humanity. From 1981 to 1987, she lived in Washington, D.C., while her husband served as U.S. Senator. While there, she was co-founder and president of Congressional Families for Drugfree Youth and was active in the Senate wives Red Cross organization. Later, she accompanied her husband on various foreign assignments, including to Belgium and the Seychelles, on behalf of the United States government.

Carolyn Mattingly died May 8, 1997, while visiting family in Aurora, Indiana.
