Background
- Scope and content:
-
The papers of Albert Sidney Camp consist of personal and business correspondence, news clippings, telegrams, tributes (resolutions), small books, memorabilia and photographs. The years represented are mainly 1930 to 1954, with a few family letters and financial/legal papers dating back to 1879.
Handwritten letters from Mr. Camp to his wife and from their children to him form a large part of the collection. Tributes to Representative Camp at his death include the bound volume of Memorial Addresses Delivered in Congress, telegrams and letters of condolence sent to his wife, and news articles and editorials. His activities in the American Legion are documented and there is a record of his military service. His early career, assistant district attorney in Northern Georgia, 1934 to 1939, and service in the state legislature 1923to 1928, is scantily represented.
- Biographical / historical:
-
Albert Sidney Camp was born on a farm near Moreland, Georgia, in Coweta county. He graduated from the law department at the University of Georgia in 1915. During World War I Camp served overseas as a member of Headquarters Detachment of the Eighty-second Division from 1917 to 1919.
After the war, Camp returned to Georgia and served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1923 to 1928. Camp then worked as assistant United States attorney for the northern district in Georgia from 1934 to 1939. He was elected to the U. S.
