Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of three scrapbooks containing articles from the Atlanta Constitution/Atlanta Journal featuring photographs taken by John Y. Coffee from 1940-1945. Photographs capture historic and everyday events at the University of Georgia, including sports, military, fraternities, sororities, team coaches, participants, and spectators. Some of the articles concern Coffee's nomination to City Council in 1945. The collection also contains a few photographs, one depicting Wally Butts.

Biographical / historical:

John Y. Coffee was a well known pharmacist in Athens, Georgia. He also served as the Chairman of the Clarke County Welfare Board and was an Athens City Councilman. Although not a professional photographer, Mr. Coffee contributed many photographs to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Athens Banner Herald and other area publications.
