Joseph S. Jacob was born September 13, 1915 in Belton, Texas and grew up in Americus, Georgia. He received his BA, M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology (1940) from the University of Georgia, thus becoming the second Ph.D. graduate from UGA. In 1945, he became a medical doctor upon graduation from Emory University of Atlanta. Jacob underwent psychoanalytic training in the 1950s and was a psychoanalyst in private practice in Ann Arbor, Michigan for over 40 years.
