Background

Scope and content:

This collection serves to help document the activities and changes of the University's School of Environmental Design from its time as part of the College of Agriculture in the 1940s through the recent incarnation as the College of Environment and Design. It contains numerous materials relating to the school's founder and first dean, Hubert B. Owens, along with other faculty, students and Garden Club members.

Biographical / historical:

The UGA School of Environmental Design was established as a separate college in 1969 with internationally known landscape architect, Hubert B. Owens, as dean. At the time of the school's establishment, Dean Owens said one of the program's goals was to "intensify the training of landscapers for their new role on the urban design team of planners, architects, engineers and social planners. In 2001 the Institute of Ecology combined with the School of Environmental Design to form the College of Environment and Design. This was only temporary, though, and in July 2007 the Institute of Ecology separated from the college and became a separate entity.
