The collection consists of one letter (manuscript copy): dated Confederate States of America, War Department, Montgomery, May 1, 1861, to "L. J. Gartrell," Atlanta, Georgia, signed "John Tyler, Jr.," regarding the reluctance of the Confederate government to supersede state's rights.

Biographical / historical:

John Tyler, Jr. (1819-1896) was the son of the the tenth President of the United States, John Tyler. He was a colonel and lawyer during the Civil War and also served as assistant Secretary of War of the Confederate States.
