Scope and content:

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs, art and printed material. Much of the correspondence is between M'Nelle and her husband while he served in Troop B, 89th Cavalry, Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), U.S. Army, during World War II.

Biographical / historical:

Mary Minelle (M'Nelle) Gibson Causey was born in 1920 in Atlanta, Georgia and attended Griffin High School, West Georgia College, and the University of Georgia. Her parents were William Claude Gibson (1887-1956) and Lucy Davis Gibson (b. 1892). M'Nelle married William Claude Causey (1916-1997) in 1941 and they had three sons – William Claude, Jr. (1943-1994), Davis Eugene (b. 1949) and Joseph Stephen (b. 1950). The Causey family lived in Athens, Georgia, and M'Nelle Causey was a freelance writer who wrote for newspapers and magazines, worked for the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, and owned M'Nelle, Inc., a costume and dress shop.
