Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains diaries and letters from two brothers during their service in the Confederate States Army in the Civil War. It also contains a pocket sized bible and hymn book.

Biographical / historical:

James Fielding Dillard (1842-1909) of Crawford, Georgia served the entire Civil War with the Troup Artillery, assembled out of Troup County, Georgia. This unit served in Cobb's Legion, and were then attached to the Army of Northern Virginia. Dillard's company served in the battles of Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and finally Appomattox. His brother John Lemuel Dillard (1843-1862) served until his death from Typhoid in Richmond, Virginia.
